How Much Does a Mural Cost? Price per Square Foot/Metre (2026)

Most murals cost $10–$50 per square foot. What's inside the price, why quotes differ so much, worked examples – and how to get an accurate quote

How Much Does a Mural Cost? Price per Square Foot/Metre (2026)

Short answer: most professional murals in the US are priced at $10 to $50 per square foot – roughly $110 to $540 per square metre. Angi's cost guide puts the average mural project at about $2,180, with most between $1,570 and $3,280. Large exterior walls, photorealistic work and hard-to-reach surfaces sit above that range; small, simple walls often hit the artist's minimum fee instead.

Below: what the published numbers say, what's inside the price, why two quotes for the same wall can be far apart, and what to send an artist to get a quote you can trust.

What it reports

Angi

Average project about $2,180; typical range $1,570–$3,280; most muralists charge $10–$50 per sq ft; wall prep $100–$1,000 on top

Thumbtack

National average fixed price $300–$2,500; most artists work from a day or hourly rate that includes materials; per-sq-ft quotes from about $15 up to several hundred dollars

Muralist profile, New Jersey (Thumbtack)

Floor of about $8 per sq ft; a typical design with moderate detail and some lettering $18–$25 per sq ft

Mural studio, Austin, TX (Thumbtack)

From $15.50 per sq ft interior, $17.50 exterior; $555 minimum

Muralist profile, California (Thumbtack)

$32–$48 per sq ft; $3,800 minimum per project

Figures as listed in September 2026. The spread is real: the lowest and highest rates above differ by a factor of six before you add access equipment or a design fee.

Worked examples

A 10 × 10 ft wall (100 sq ft, about 9.3 m²):

  • at $8 per sq ft – $800

  • at $18–$25 per sq ft – $1,800–$2,500

  • at $32–$48 per sq ft – $3,200–$4,800, or the $3,800 minimum if it's higher

A 20 × 10 ft wall (200 sq ft, about 18.6 m²):

  • at $10 per sq ft – $2,000

  • at $25 per sq ft – $5,000

  • at $50 per sq ft – $10,000

Same wall, same size – a fivefold difference depending on the artist, the detail and the conditions. That's normal, and it's why a price per square foot is a starting point, not a final number.

What's inside the price

A mural quote usually covers more than paint on a wall. Some artists bundle everything into one rate; others list each part. Ask which.

  • Design. Sketches, revisions and final artwork. Often a separate fee if the design is original – if you bring your own, like a logo, you pay for production only.

  • Production. The artist's time on the wall – the biggest part of most quotes.

  • Materials. Primer, paint, sealant, brushes or spray cans. Exterior and specialty paints cost more.

  • Wall prep. Cleaning, patching, priming. Angi lists $100–$1,000 for this alone.

  • Access. Ladders for a room; scaffolding or a lift for anything above one storey.

  • Travel. For artists coming from out of town.

  • Protective coating. UV-resistant or anti-graffiti varnish for outdoor walls.

  • Permits and usage rights. Public walls may need city approval; commercial use of the image may be priced in.

Why two quotes can be so different

  • Detail. Flat shapes and a few colours paint fast. Portraits, gradients and photorealism take many more hours per square foot.

  • Surface. Smooth drywall is easy. Brick, stucco, metal and textured walls need more prep and more paint.

  • Height and access. A ceiling or a second-storey wall adds equipment, safety time and cost – one of the studios above lists ceilings and stairs as a surcharge.

  • Indoor vs outdoor. Outdoor work needs weather-resistant materials and depends on the weather; the Austin studio above charges $2 more per sq ft for exterior walls.

  • Minimum fees. Small walls often cost more per square foot, because artists set a floor – $555 and $3,800 in the examples above – to cover travel, setup and cleanup.

  • Experience. Established muralists with a portfolio and insurance charge more than artists starting out.

  • Location. City rates are usually higher than rural ones.

How muralists price their work

Three models, sometimes combined:

  1. Per square foot (or square metre). Wall area × rate. Easy to compare between artists; the rate hides the other costs, so ask what's included.

  2. Day or hourly rate. The artist estimates the days needed. Thumbtack reports this is how most muralists work.

  3. Fixed project fee. One agreed price for the whole job, set before work starts. Clear for both sides once the scope is final.

Most professionals also ask for a deposit and payment in stages, for example 30% on signing, 30% midway and 40% on completion.

How to get an accurate quote

Send the artist five things and the quote gets precise fast:

  1. Wall dimensions – width and height, in feet or metres.

  2. Photos of the wall – straight on, plus close-ups of the surface.

  3. Design idea – a reference, a sketch, or your own artwork.

  4. Location and access – indoor or outdoor, floor level or height, parking, power.

  5. Deadline – and whether the wall is available on weekends.

Compare quotes by what's included, not only the total.

FAQ

How much does a mural cost per square foot? Most professional muralists in the US charge $10 to $50 per square foot, according to Angi – about $110 to $540 per square metre. Highly detailed or hard-to-reach work can be higher.

How much does a small mural cost? Often the artist's minimum fee rather than a per-square-foot price. Minimums in published muralist listings range from about $500 to several thousand dollars.

Is the design included in the price? It depends on the artist. Many charge a separate design fee for original artwork and a production fee for painting. Ask for both lines in the quote.

Do muralists ask for a deposit? Usually, yes. A common structure is a deposit on signing and the rest in stages – for example 30% / 30% / 40%.
