Which VR Headset Do You Need to Paint Murals with Sketchar?

A quick buyer's guide to the VR headsets that run Sketchar's wall-painting mode — Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, Pico 4 Ultra, And Apple Vision Pro — with typical prices by country and where to buy them.

Painting a full-size mural on your living room wall sounds like sci-fi, but it takes exactly one piece of hardware: a modern mixed-reality headset. Here's what works with Sketchar on VR, what it costs, and where to buy it.

The short answer

Sketchar's wall-painting mode runs on headsets with color passthrough — cameras that show your real room in full color so you can see the wall you're painting on. That means:

  • Meta Quest 3 — the best experience: sharpest passthrough, highest resolution, most comfortable for long VR drawing sessions.

  • Meta Quest 3S — the budget pick. Same chip and same mixed-reality features, slightly lower display specs. Great value if it's your first headset and you mainly want a mural app for Meta Quest.

  • Pico 4 Ultra — the strongest alternative in Europe and Asia, with color passthrough and solid room tracking.

  • Apple Vision Pro — gorgeous passthrough, but Sketchar isn't available on visionOS yet, so it's not the headset to buy for murals today.

Older devices like Quest 2 or Pico 4 (non-Ultra) have weak or black-and-white passthrough, so painting a real wall mural in VR won't look right.

How much do they cost?

Prices move with promos and storage size, so treat these as ballpark figures and check the current listing before you buy.

Meta Quest 3S (128 GB) — around $249 USD, £289 GBP, €329 EUR, CA$379, A$499. The 256 GB version usually runs about $50 more.

Meta Quest 3 (512 GB) — around $499 USD, £469 GBP, €549 EUR, CA$699, A$899.

Pico 4 Ultra (256 GB) — around €599 EUR / £529 GBP. Pico isn't officially sold in the United States, so US artists should go with Quest.

Apple Vision Pro (256 GB) — around $3,499 USD, £3,499 GBP, €3,999 EUR. Premium hardware for premium budgets.

In markets without official Meta distribution (parts of Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia), expect local retailers to add 15–30% on top of the US price.

Where to buy

Official stores. meta.com ships Quest 3 and 3S in most of North America, Western Europe, Australia and Japan, and it's the safest route for warranty and returns. Pico sells directly through picoxr.com in supported European and Asian regions.

Big-box electronics retailers. Best Buy, Target and Walmart (US), Currys and Argos (UK), MediaMarkt and FNAC (EU), JB Hi-Fi (Australia), Best Buy Canada, Amazon nearly everywhere. Holiday and back-to-school sales are the best time to catch a discount — Quest 3S has dipped below $200 during Black Friday.

Local resellers and marketplaces. Fine in regions without official sales, but check that the headset isn't account-locked and that the controllers and charger are included.

Refurbished. Meta's certified refurbished program offers Quest 3 with a full warranty at a lower price when stock is available.

What else you'll need

A clear play space of roughly 2×4 meters, a real wall you can face, and decent lighting — passthrough cameras need light to track your room accurately. Wi-Fi matters too, especially if you want to make VR art together with friends in multiplayer, where several artists work on the same wall at once.

Once your headset is set up, install Sketchar, pick a wall, and start your first mural — no paint, no cleanup, unlimited undo.
